eastwards from the Lawley, Shropshire. Composed of ancient Precambrian
volcanic rocks the Lawley has to the east the oldest Cambrian
rocks in Britain, the Lower Comley sandstones. These are greenish
micaceous sandstones, the green colour produced by the mineral
glauconite which is indicative of marine conditions..There
seems to have been a world wide marine transgression in the
early Cambrian, maybe with a sea-level rise as much as 200-300
m.
